When the Forest Became My Calm – And a Collection Was Born

Woodland Wonders is a collection of hand-painted watercolor prints featuring woodland animals, created to bring a quiet zone of imagination and rest into a child’s room. In this post, I’m sharing the thoughts behind the animals, the colors, and the calm little corner they are meant to live in.

I believe we have all felt it — the calm that washes over you when you step into a forest. How stillness spreads through your body and the noise of everyday life fades into a symphony of green tones, earthy scents, and the soft rustling of wind in the trees. In the safety of the forest, everything grows at its own pace — without pressure, without demands.

In a world where children’s rooms are often filled with bright colors, plastic, and loud prints, I wanted to create something entirely different. Something that breathes stillness, safety, and reflection.

It is that feeling — the quiet calm of the forest — that I wanted to carry into a child’s room. A corner where imagination and rest can meet.

That is where the seed of Woodland Wonders was planted.

Where Painting Came Back to Life

I have been painting for many years — experimenting with different techniques, searching for my expression. For a long time, I asked myself: What do I truly want to say with what I create?

Perhaps it was that longing that led me back to my roots — to watercolor, to nature, to the stillness that once made me start painting in the first place.

By chance, I began looking at children’s prints and became fascinated by how much story a single image can hold. That is where the vision for Woodland Wonders began to take shape — a collection where the animals spark curiosity and every brushstroke is allowed to breathe.

But the path there was long. I started painting the collection more than a year before it was finished — and set aside seven paintings along the way. It wasn’t until the color palette, the expressions, and the feeling truly settled in my heart that I knew:

Now it’s right.

Creating with Feeling

My paintings grow slowly — brushstroke by brushstroke. I work in watercolor, a medium that doesn’t allow mistakes, yet creates a living surface and a soft expression. Often, time and space disappear when I paint.

For me, it’s not about perfect brushstrokes — it’s about capturing a feeling. And about letting each motif carry its own story.

The Animals of the Forest

Each animal in Woodland Wonders has its own quiet moment — inspired by the rhythm of the forest and a child’s boundless imagination. Through the story cards, you and your child can get to know them:

🧸 Benji, the little bear, carries a calm that gently spreads. Safe among the fir trees, he explores the world at his own pace — always with his mother close by.

🐰 Bonnie, the young hare, rests hidden among the leaves, waiting without worry for her mother.

🦉 Nova, the little owl, is peaceful and watchful. She follows the sounds of the forest with her eyes and keeps quiet guard while others sleep, carrying a calm that can be felt even in the dark.

🦊 Remi, the fox cub, is curious and alert, ears perked and eyes full of discovery — not quite ready to fall asleep just yet.

🦔 Nilo, the hedgehog, lies in the grass thinking, nose lifted to the air, quietly curious about the world around him.

🦌 Luna, the fawn, rests among the flowers and grows at her own pace — safe in waiting and brave in her own gentle way.

We hope each print becomes more than just an image — that they can become small anchors of safety in a child’s room, especially in that quiet corner where the day is allowed to land.

A Room for Rest & Imagination

Eight years ago, as a newly separated mother, I stood in my son’s new room wanting to create something that was entirely his. A room where he would feel safe — where he could land after long days and simply be himself.

At that moment, I wished prints like these had existed. Woodland Wonders was painted for that feeling.

The Calming Magic of Color

The colors in the collection are carefully chosen:

  • Green, the color of the forest, is one of the most harmonious tones. It supports both rest and concentration — perfect for a child’s room.
  • Brown creates warmth and safety. It grounds the motifs without overwhelming them.

The tones are muted so they don’t take over the space — but gently hold it.
Together, they create a soft contrast that both soothes and inspires.

For the Quiet Moment

A child’s room is a place for both play and rest — and art can play an important role in that balance. While toys can easily be put away, prints remain on the wall. That is exactly why I wanted to create motifs that carry calm — especially in corners for sleep, rest, or story time.

They can hang together as a full gallery wall or be placed individually in small corners and on shelves. They are created to work together — but also to speak on their own.

Closing Words

With Woodland Wonders, I hope to give children their own small corner of stillness and wonder — in the middle of everyday life.

Thank you for letting me share this world with you.

With warmth,
Karolina 🤎
